Veteran filmmakers, actors and sibling duo Mark and Jay Duplass are bringing their talents to the world of podcasting. The Duplass Brothers and their joint owned production company have signed a development deal with Spotify to make original exclusive content to the streaming giant.Known for their popular work on HBO like “Togetherness” and “Room 104”, the brothers will create both scripted and unscripted podcast content.
This isn’t the brothers first stab in the podcasting game. Head of Programming at Spotify, Liz Gately showed strong support for the duo stating, “They are so creatively versatile that we’re confident they will figure this whole podcasting thing out.” One thing that gave Spotify further confidence in the signing was their recent appearances in front of the camera. Mark has been frequent appearances on Apple’s “The Morning Show” and Jay has played a starring role in 4 seasons of the hit Amazon original series “Transparent.”
Though there has been no details on the specifics of the show, Spotify has stated that all the series produced by Duplass Brothers Productions will be exclusive on the app but will be available for both subscribers and free listening customers.
Spotify’s latest signing of the Duplass Brothers is another sign that they are doubling down on the podcast medium. Earlier this Summer they made a ground shaking move signing Joe Rogan to a $100 million dollar deal. They didn’t stop there, signing Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground Productions and signing Kim Kardashian to host a podcast on criminal justice reform.
One thing for sure is that the streaming giant is pushing their chips all in on original podcast programming, which for better or worse is something we’ll all be watching (or listening to).
